Our personal health is much more than numbers on a scale or outcomes on a chart. Lifestyles, social engagement and our emotional and spiritual states are all important to being healthy. The basic truth is that personal health is just that – personal. It’s specific to each of us, determined by how we live our daily lives, our perceptions of our own life, and truly how fit we are in mind, body and spirit.

This holistic, objective and subjective view honors the interconnected nature of human life. We are physical, emotional, spiritual and social, as are the people we serve. We’re all built this way to survive. It’s a reminder that when it comes to health and well-being, the whole human being is always greater than the sum of the parts.

How we think affects how we feel. How we feel impacts what we do. And what we do leads to what we experience and better health and well-being.

Emotional health is crucial to our overall well-being.

Emotions are a big part of our experience as human beings. They’re involved in everything, influencing our perceptions, decisions and actions. Feeling them, having control over them and keeping them in balance are all good, and working to maintain healthy emotions and resilience matters to physical health and to every dimension of well-being.

It’s no surprise emotional health remains a challenge and focus for us. Likely due to the barrage of new demands, concerns and limitations in our daily lives, our Mentally Healthy Days dipped significantly during the height of the pandemic, and our perception of our emotional health also declined as measured by the Humana Well-being Index.

We can build emotional resilience by embracing positive views of our world, like optimism and gratitude. And since our body and mind are connected, taking care of our bodies also positively impacts our emotional health. Fortunately, when we needed it most, many of us found support through care kits and other resilience building experiences.

Prioritizing health produces long-term benefits.

For our Humana community, health is always a primary focus, and the pandemic placed health, especially physical health, in the headlines every day. When anxious, many of us double down on what we know best, turning to our culture of health and well-being for information, resources and support. And our results illustrate this positive culture makes a difference. Here’s some proof: as we age, our biometric risks generally increase. But those of us who have been part of Humana’s well-being movement since 2012 have fewer biometric risks than expected – averaging 26 percent lower than typical adults over an eight-year span.

In a year when our physical and mental health encountered considerable challenges, our Health Score was boosted by sustained Go365 engagement, some measured physical outcomes and belief that our personal health remains good.

Health Risks

Overall, our average number of biometric risks rose, primarily driven by more of us at the far end of the risk spectrum (five or more risks). In addition, we experienced upticks in elevated blood pressure, cholesterol and other heart risk factors. However, reported BMI risk decreased overall and fewer of us have elevated glucose levels. And while more of us reported elevated perceived stress than in 2019, these levels moderated through resilience and recovery, ultimately landing within goal range.

Go365’s purpose is to encourage and reward healthy lifestyle behaviors and healthier outcomes. It shone as a bright spot for our community as physical health maintained a high priority. The percentage of us at Gold Status or higher rose from 45.7 percent to 47.8 percent. The gain came from more of us reaching the highest status – Platinum. As a result, the difference between our average Go365 Age and average chronological age shrank slightly. The difference is now 3.53 years. Let’s build on this positive trend to reach our 2.5-year differential goal.

Behavioral & Lifestyle

While some of us became more engaged with Go365 in 2020, our overall physical activity measures declined somewhat as our typical exercise and movement patterns were disrupted. Even though we’re still surpassing our goal, the percentage of us reporting at least 2.5 hours of physical activity per week further declined from our 2018 high. And COVID-19’s arrival last spring coincided with the start of our 100 Day Dash, reducing participation in our annual cultural event that re-energizes activity levels and healthy habits. 40 percent of us engaged in the Dash in 2020, the fewest since 2014. Some good news: our reported level of tobacco use and our good nutrition habits remained steady.

Humana Well-being Index

The Humana Well-being Index Assessment shows our overall perceptions of our health declined slightly in 2020. How we feel about our physical and spiritual health remained steady, with feelings about our physical health once again exceeding our goal.

It makes sense that perceptions of our emotional health declined in 2020, dropping to levels we’ve not seen in years. 2020 was a unique set of circumstances, and among its lessons is that sometimes happiness, health and well-being happen naturally. Maintaining a whole-person understanding of ourselves and our community enables us to make – and keep making – conscious choices to adopt the positive mindset that makes health and well-being possible, even amid challenging or painful realities.
